I want you to know that the Fourth of July is especially personal to my family. For us, it is not just our nation’s birthday. It is the day we are reminded that, as we chose freedom over tyranny, there were many individuals that made great sacrifices for our freedom. Even some have paid the ultimate price for our nation to be free.
From Crispus Attucks and George Middleton to Admiral Michelle Howard, US Navy and my brother Seaman Cherone L. Gunn, US Navy, tremendous sacrifices are made each day in service to our country. As we celebrate the profound pride of being American, we should always take time to honor the women and men in our armed forces, whose immeasurable leadership, bravery and sacrifice have made our country what it is today.
That sacrifice is shared with husbands and wives, with sons and daughters, with fathers and mothers, with brothers and sisters, who are asked to wait at home as their loved ones protect our nation. Their heroism, too, has helped pave the path of our freedom.
My family and I, have always been a champion for military families. As an American Gold Star Family and victims of terrorism, we have lived our own struggle. We have also witnessed the struggles of other families. As a nation, there is always more we can do to help our military families through their struggles.
My family always seeks to play a leadership role in service to our veterans and active duty, as well as their families. I am an active contributor to the Palmetto Warrior Connection as they serve veterans in South Carolina. Just last week, my mother, Mona Gunn was installed as the National President for the American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. We work to pay tribute to our military families, who have given so much to so many that call America home.
Happy Fourth of July!
